May Hiking Challenges

Mountain Goat Challenge

Did you know that there are 80 mountains in Massachusetts?  They range from 102 feet to 3,491 feet at Mt. Greylock!  This month’s challenge is become a mountain goat and hike as many mountains as you can.

You are not limited to only mountains in Massachusetts, the most hiked mountain in the United States is just over the border in New Hampshire!  Mt. Monadnock is a great mountain to hike for all skill levels, feel free to expand your mountain experiences.

Some things to take part of this challenge:

  • Bring Your Six Cub Scout Essentials
  • Take a SAFE Selfie at the Top of the Mountain and Post it to Social Media with #hnehikingclub2021
  • Check the Local Guidelines Before Hiking
  • Be Safe and Hike with Your Parents or Your Pack or Den

The Scout who hikes the most mountains in May will receive a cool prize.  Remember:  they must be different mountains.

Flat Cubbie

Remember your new flat buddy?  It’s time to take him or her on more adventures.  Every Flat Cubbie needs a name, so your challenge this month is to name your Flat Cubbie and bring them on every hike with you.

Post your Flat Cubbie pictures with their name and location of your hike.

Memorial Day Hike

Memorial Day is Monday, May 31, 2021.  Encourage your Pack, Den or Family to take a hike over the weekend and stop along the way to have a moment of silence for our fallen heroes. There are many historical trails and cemeteries to hike and explore in our area.

In between the BBQs and parades, we encourage all Cub Scouts to thank a Veteran and to pay respect to the fallen Veterans this Memorial Day

Buddy Check!

One of the most important points of hiking is the buddy system.  When participating in an outdoor activity, Scouts should have a buddy.  They should know where that buddy is at all times, and they should never go anywhere without their buddy

There are several Cub Scout adventures with requirements about the buddy system. The Tiger and Bear adventures are about having a buddy when you’re in the water.

Lion Mountain Lion Requirement 1: Gather the outdoor items you need to have with you when you go on an outdoor adventure and understand how they are used. Also, understand and commit to practicing the buddy system.

Tiger Floats and Boats Requirement 2: With your den, talk about why it’s important to have a buddy and then play the buddy game.

Wolf Paws on the Path Requirement 2. Tell what the buddy system is and why we always use it in Cub Scouts. Describe what you should do if you get separated from your group while hiking.

Bear Salmon Run Requirement 1. Explain the importance of response personnel or lifeguards in a swimming area. Tell how the buddy system works and why it is important.

Fun Hiking Games

Hiking is definitely a great chance to enjoy some fresh air and to get a break from your daily routines but it doesn’t have to be just walking!  Here are a couple of links to some Fun Hiking Games and More Fun Hiking Games you can play with your family, Den or Pack on your next hike!
